Panther Golf Wins Home Invitational

The Concordia High School Girls Golf team hosted its home invitational on Tuesday, September 2nd, at the Concordia Country Club. With 6 schools from North Central Kansas in attendance, the Panthers earned their first team victory of the season in just their second tournament, and Junior Mya Niehues claimed her first individual title of the year.

Concordia started the season at the 4A State Golf Preview at the Carey Park Golf Course in Hutchinson, a strong first showing for CHS, but as they say in Kansas, "there's no place like home". The Concordia Country Club features a 9-hole course that the varsity players played twice for the 18-hole tournament. The par was set at 68 for a perfect weather day.

Below are the team standings:

1     Concordia - Varsity    365
2    Rock Creek - Varsity    375
3    Marysville - Varsity    426
4    Wamego - Varsity    444
5    Seneca - Varsity    472
6    Clay Center only played 9 holes, so scores are unavailable.

"I realize that Carey Park and Concordia Golf and Wellness are two very different courses, but they each present their own unique challenges, too," Head Girls Golf Coach Gene Rundus said. "I was very pleased to see our team score go from 402 to 365. With that score, we were able to hold off a good Rock Creek team by ten strokes and win the tournament."

Concordia will now travel to the Salina Municipal Golf Course on Tuesday, September 9th, for the Salina Central Invite. Tee off is set for 2 pm.

"All the girls had some really nice shots today, and even when things weren't going as planned, they really hung in there and made it a successful day," Rundus said.
