Cloud County Women's Basketball Cruises to 84-38 Home Victory Over Fort Hays Tech Northwest

A wire-to-wire decision was never in doubt for the Cloud County Community College women's basketball team as it posted a lopsided 84-38 home win over Fort Hays Tech Northwest in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference play inside Arley Bryant Gymnasium on Saturday, February 1.
Five players scored in double-figures for Cloud County. Freshman Lillian Petersen turned in 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including connecting on three treys, in 22 minutes off the bench. Freshman forward Talasia Thomas recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman forward Shea Wurtz registered 16 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Sophomore guard TiAna Davis tallied 13 points, seven assists, and four rebounds. Freshman DaNae Crosby had 10 points.
Freshman guard Bre Frazier collected seven points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Sophomore forward Meilin Guo added four points, while sophomore guard Kiley Smich didn't score but made quality contributions off the bench, picking up eight rebounds, five steals, and four assists.
The T-Birds played all nine of their active athletes, with each playing at least 12 minutes in the win.
Cloud County shot 45.6 percent from the field and limited Fort Hays Tech Northwest to 28.6 percent shooting, including 11.1 percent from behind the arc. The T-Birds dominated in the paint where they outscored Fort Hays Tech Northwest 44-16.
Cloud County was in control from the very beginning, opening the game on a 14-0 run starting with a layup by Thomas and ending with a layup by Davis. A jumper by Fort Hays Tech Northwest sophomore guard Alba Lamas made it a nine-point game at 15-6 with 3:06 left in the first quarter. Petersen connected on her first three-pointer of the night, pushing Cloud County's lead back to double-digits. The T-Birds led 19-8 at the end of the first.
Cloud County scored the first eleven points of the second quarter to lead by 22, 30-8, with 6:10 to play. The T-Birds registered 11 steals in the second quarter and forced Fort Hays Tech Northwest into 11 turnovers in the period. Cloud County extended its advantage to 24 points at 40-16 at the break.
Cloud County kept its foot on the gas in the second half, extending their lead to 35 points at 67-32 at the end of the third quarter. The T-Birds then outscored Fort Hays Tech Northwest 17-6 over the final ten minutes, leading by as many as 48 points before settling for the 46-point win.
The victory snapped Cloud County's three-game losing streak, improving their record to 13-8 overall and 8-8 in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference action. The T-Birds are back home on Wednesday, February 5 when they host Colby at 6 pm inside Arley Bryant Gymnasium.
