Cloud County Women's Basketball Completes Season Sweep of Independence, Extends Winning Streak to Three

The Cloud County Community College women's basketball team completed a season sweep of the Independence Pirates in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference action, earning a 64-50 road win on Saturday, February 8 to extend their winning streak to three games.
Freshman forward Talasia Thomas finished the afternoon with a game-high 23 points for her fourth game of 20 or more points this season. Freshman forward Shea Wurtz and sophomore guard TiAna Davis both added 10 points. Freshman forward Lilliana Petersen finished with seven points. Freshman guard DaNae Crosby and sophomore guard Kiley Smich posted six points each, while sophomore Meilin Guo had two points.
Sophomore forward Lauryn Gentle paced the Pirates with 17 points.
The T-Birds finished the game shooting 24-of-60 (40.0 percent) from the floor, including 6-of-19 (31.6 percent) from behind the arc, with Thomas and Davis each pouring in a pair of three-pointers. Cloud County also made 10-of-17 (58.8 percent) from the free-throw line.
After trailing 15-14 at the end of the first quarter, the T-Birds outscored the Pirates 35-14 over the next two quarters to take a 20-point lead at 49-29 entering the fourth quarter. Thomas posted 10 points in the third frame on her way to a season-high 23 points. With 10 points, Davis has scored in double-digits in five straight games and now has 19 double-digit performances on the year. Wurtz, making her seventh start of the season, has scored in double-figures in three consecutive games and five of the last seven contests.
The win marks the second straight for Cloud County over Independence, following the team's 75-61 home win over the Pirates on December 7, 2024. The T-Birds have also won five of the last six games played in the series.
Cloud County returns home on Wednesday, February 12 when they play host to Coffeyville Community College. The tipoff to Wednesday's contest is scheduled for 6 pm.
