Veteran's Day Events in Concordia
In Concordia, there were three events to honor Veteran's Day that took place throughout the morning.
The first was the Avenue of Flags, where volunteers met at Pleasant Hill Cemetery at 8:15 AM to raise 199 American flags onto lines of flag poles set up in the middle of the cemetery.
At 9 AM, there was a Veteran's Day program held at CHS, where veterans had reserved seating to view the ceremony.
Lastly, a ceremony was held at the American Legion Post #76 to honor veterans and Veteran's Day, beginning at 11 AM to honor the time in which the ceasefire began at the end of World War 1 on November 11. The honorary speaker at the ceremony was Lowell May, who first entered the U.S. military in 1955. He discussed the changes and differences in the military from his time in the service to the present day, how people describe and view military veterans, and offered a reminder that it isn't only infantrymen and women who are veterans, support personnel who have also served should also have pride in being veterans, as they have played a large role in military operations all the way back to our very first conflicts as a nation.
The American Legion will lower the flags at Pleasant Hill Cemetery at 4 PM on this Veteran's Day. If any individuals would like to volunteer, please meet at the maintenance shed at the cemetery.
