Inmate Dies in Washington County Jail

An inmate died in the Washington County Jail early Saturday.

According to a release from the Washington County Sheriff's Office, officers discovered 42-year-old Kyle E. Mashburn was unresponsive in his cell just after 6 AM. Staff rendered immediate aid and EMS was dispatched to the jail, but could not revive him. Preliminary evidence indicates Mashburn took his own life.

Mashburn was in the jail awaiting trial/sentencing after accepting a plea of no contest to one count of Rape and one count of Sexual Exploitation of a Child, for a recommended sentence with the Kansas Department of Corrections of 299 months.

An autopsy will be conducted. The investigation is ongoing and pending by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
