Drivers Encouraged to be Patient and Share the Road for Biking Across Kansas Participants
Biking Across Kansas, the state's longest running annual bicycle tour, will be staying overnight in Concordia on Wednesday, June 12th. This event will bring over 700 cyclists to the community.
The Concordia Police Department is asking all citizens to be extra cautious and vigilant to ensure the safety of both city residents and the visiting cyclists. Here are some important safety reminders:
1. Watch for Cyclists: Cyclists will be traveling on city streets and highways. Please be on the lookout for them, especially at intersections and crosswalks.
2. Share the Road: Remember to share the road with cyclists. Maintain a safe distance when passing and do not drive or park in designated bike lanes.
3. Obey Traffic Laws: Both drivers and cyclists are expected to follow all traffic laws. This includes stopping at stop signs and traffic lights, yielding the right of way, and not using mobile phones while driving or cycling.
4. Slow Down: Reduce your speed in areas with heavy bike traffic and be prepared to stop quickly if necessary.
5. Parking and Congestion: Be aware that there may be increased congestion and limited parking availability in some areas. Plan accordingly and consider alternative routes to avoid delays.
Concordia City Manager Amy Lange says your cooperation and attention to safety will help make this event a success and ensure that Concordia remains a welcoming and safe community for everyone.
The time spent in the overnight stops also provides a chance for Biking Across Kansas participants to get a feel for life in a small town.
