The City of Concordia has closed the west sidewalk along Washington Street in the downtown district for repairs.

According to the release, adjacent parking spaces on Washington Street will be unavailable during this time.

Pedestrians are asked to stay back and respect the barricades that are in place to avoid any injuries.

“Our public storm sewer system is a maze of underground structures and pipes that carry stormwater north and east of town. In downtown Concordia, the storm sewer system is made of concrete walls and floors, with concrete lids that serve the dual purpose of a public sidewalk. When these concrete walls of the storm sewer fail, a portion of the sidewalk can also fail leaving a trip hazard with a void below that is about four feet deep,” says Concordia public works director Shane Kisby. “When these failures are discovered, our Public Works crew works quickly to fix them in an effort to keep the public safe and our businesses open.”

Repair work is expected to take two to three weeks.
